Anti-Snoring Devices

November 23rd, 2007

When the natural methods don’t work we sometimes need to turn to special devices such as masks to inhibit snoring. These treatments are usually only used in the most extreme cases, where the user may stop breathing due to the condition known as sleep apnea.

A Continuous Positive Airway Pressure Appliance or CPAP are one of the more commonly used and known devices for preventing snoring out there. A CPAP is a mask that connects to an air source that keeps the air passages open and flowing which reduces vibrations in the throat tissue greatly. These devices to take quite a bit of getting used to before you can sleep without even thinking about the mask on your face. These devices do come with a pretty hefty price tag though, ranging from $1,00 all the way up to $3,000 devices. These devices become increasingly uncomfortable after about a year of consistatant use.

You may also consider getting a bed made especially for reducing snoring. These beds can be quite expensive some times but they tend to be exceptionally comfortable. And are used to elevate the head which opens air passages and keeps the jaw in an appropriate position. These beds can be as expensive as $1000 or even more.

For mild snoring, special pillows and nasal strips are commonly used. These pillows are made to keep the snorers head flat. And nasal applications like nasal strips specialize in keeping the nasal passages open which promotes breathing through the nose rather than through the mouth.

Using a Mouth Piece to Stop Snoring

November 20th, 2007

The mouth piece, a popular snoring inhibitor, has been proven to reduce and even stop snoring in 60 to 80 percent of those that use them.  Snoring is caused by airways that are too narrow or relaxed to allow the proper about of air in and out of your lungs. By using a mouth piece, it will force your lower jaw to sit just a little farther out than usual, allowing the air to flow more easily and in turn inhibiting the snoring.

Since the popularity of the mouth piece has risen to much in recent years, many companies are developing their own style of them. Every manufacturer of these claim their mouth piece will stop snoring, obviously this isn’t the case. When choosing a mouth piece make sure that it sits comfortably in your mouth. The ideal mouth piece will mold to the contour of the users mouth for the most comfortable fit. If you can’t find a piece that allows you to use it without discomfort, you can choose to have a custom mouth piece to be designed for you.

Keep in mind that a mouth piece WILL NOT treat sleep apnea in anyway, don’t let anybody tell you otherwise. While they may prevent the snoring that sleep apnea causes, it will leave the apnea untreated, and can later result in other medical issues.

Lifestyle Changes That Reduce Snoring

November 17th, 2007

There are many different variations and forms of snoring that aren’t curable through conventional methods so we turn to natural treatments and vice versa.

Weight Loss
A common cause of snoring is being overweight of suffering from obesity. The obvious solution to this is to exercise and be in shape. Not only will it reduce snoring but you’ll also be healthier. A real win-win situation. The heavier body mass of those overweight makes it that much easier for your fleshy throat to block your air passages.

Stop Smoking and Drinking
Both these activites cause irritation and ifflamation of the throat and air passages. Tobacco found in cigarettes and cigars can effect the cells lining your air passages causing theme to be effected differently by the air passing through your body, and can cause excessive mucus build up, leaving less room for air to move in and out of the mouth.
Alcohol relaxes the skin tissue, in turn closing the gap in the throat making it difficult for air to pass with ease, which will increase vibration and snoring.

Sleep Posture
One of the most common and easiest methods of stoping or reducing snoring is to simply change the position in which you sleep. Sleeping on your pack promotes relaxation of the soft pallet, which will, you guessed it, close the air passages. Sleeping on ones side will actually open the throat to promote easier breathing, be preventing the jaw form slipping back causing blockage. Elevating ones neck and head will also work wonders.

Snoring’s Effect On Ones Health

November 15th, 2007

Snoring is by far the sleeping condition that effects more people than any other disease. Almost everyone snores from time to time and isn’t something to be ashamed of. Adults aren’t the only ones that suffer from snoring either. Infants, children, teens, and even pets suffer from snoring from time to time. Now you know what I mean when I say everyone suffers from it occasionally.

Snoring can cause the snorer to wake up repeatedly through their night of sleep. Snoring can also take a toll on the snorer’s partner. Having a snoring parter can make it difficult to fall asleep and can cause them to awake from their sleep from time to time as well. In some cases snoring can greatly effect the quality of sleep one receives which in turn causes the snorer and/or their partner to become lazy and irritable the next day.

Snoring isn’t something that should be brushed aside. Many aren’t aware of the potential health problems that it can cause. Snoring has be proven to cause a series of heart and blood conditions and diseases. Many people are surprised to discover that snoring often results in high blood pressure, heart disease, stroke, and even diabetes.

Mild snoring can cause the snorer to wake up throughout the night and to toss and turn throughout the night, resulting in very low quality sleep. In cases of severe snoring the sufferer often snores no matter what position they are sleeping in and will do so all night. Those that sleep by themselves typically will leave the snoring unnoticed for obvious reasons. However, those that suffer from more serious forms of snoring can even wake themselves up, either because they also suffer from sleep apnea or because the snoring is so loud that it can wake them up. On the other hand if you do share a bed with someone then I’m sure you know what its like to be woken up by a jab in the side from your partner.

Anyway, the point is that if you are a snorer, its a very wise decision to make a trip to the doctor or a sleep clinic to make sure your snoring won’t result in more serious medical problem.

Ways to Stop Snoring

November 1st, 2007

As with any unwanted condition, the first question that enters ones mind is - is it cureable? Luckily snoring is very curable as its a condition that many people have had to suffer with, I know I do. Often times snoring doesn’t need to be treated as it can be quiet and not have dangerous effects. On the other hand there is excessivly loud and disturbing snoring, and can often come with harmful effects and cause uneasy sleeping.

As we discussed in an earlier article, snoring is caused by relaxed and loose muscles in the throat, that have air running by them causing vibrations. These effects can be increased by smoking, consumption of alcohol, and by being overweight or obese. These are just a few of the lifestyle changes that can reduce snoring.

There are also a wide variety of store bought treatments that can aid in the reducion of snoring. Some of these snoring aids include air masks, adjustable beds, and dental applications that help to open ones air passages. Nasal devices are used to promote breathing through your nasal passages rather than through your mouth. Dental applications commonly prevent the tounge from blockin your air passage. Dental or oral applications can be acquired through your dentist.

There are even surgical treatments that are used to treat snoring. One of the most common surgeries is Uvulopalatopharyngoplasty, also known as UPPP. This surgery entails trimming away exessive throat tissue. A more modern treatment is the Laser-Assisted Uvulopalatopharyngoplasty or LAUP. These methods prevent extra flesh from blocking your throat. These treatments are irreversible to they should only be used in the most extreme snoring cases.

A common reliever of snoring is to simply not sleep on your back. Instead sleeping on your side with with you head elivated can be an extremely easy and effective cure.

You obviously want to consult your physician before continuing with any of these treatments.
